Detroit is the largest city in the state. It's best known as the center of car manufacturers and for the Motown sound. As a large city, Detroit has some crime and bad neighborhoods. In recent years the city has been working hard to improve its safety and its image.

      Things to See & Do:

In such a large city, there is almost no end of attractions, museums, art, music, theater, dance, sports, and fun of all kinds. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

      • Take a tour of the city with Inside Detroit. They offer basic or personalized tours, covering shopping, architecture, night life, whatever your interest.
      • Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the world's largest on this important aspect of U.S. history. It houses over 30,000 artifacts and other materials, and chronicles African American history and important figures.
      • The Detroit Institute of Arts, a world class museum with many distinguished permanent and traveling exhibitions, is home to “Detroit Industry,” the famous mural by Diego Rivera. The DIA also has impressive collections of African art and European art.
      • Michigan Sports Hall of Fame honors athletes from Michigan, including Ty Cobb, Dave Bing, Ted Lindsey, and those who went on to other careers, such as President Gerald R. Ford and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White.
      • The Automotive Hall of Fame honors the men and women of the motor vehicle industry and preserves the history of mobility.
      • Airborne Skate Park is for skaters, skateboarders, and BMX riders. They offer their own specially designed equipment, 22,000 feet of indoor mist collers, a 2000-square-foot observation balcony, a pro shop, and more. “We provide a clean, organized family oriented facility.”
      • Stop by the Café de Troit on Library St. for creamy coffees and tasty sandwiches and salads. Enjoy comfy chairs and the work of local artists.

      Nightlife:

      • The Detroit Institute of Arts presents live music every Friday night, or join an art-making workshop, draw in the galleries, or take a guide tour. Friday activities are from 6–10 p.m. and absolutely free.
      • Detroit Art Space on E. Baltimore has contemporary art, an amazing array of musical artists—everything from flamenco to folk to Armention harp—plus omelets!
      • Third Street Saloon on W. Forest is suspected of having the best pizza in the city, as well as their famous Everything Burger.
      • Motown has been the starting point for countless soul, techno, and park artists. Who will be the next break-out performer? Check out the Motor City's live music clubs (remember, you must be 21 to drink alcohol—call ahead to see if you'll be able to get in).
        • The Well on Randolph St.
        • St. Andrew's Hall on E. Congress
        • Shelter on E. Congress
        • Majestic Café on Woodward Ave.
        • I-Rock Night Club on Harper Ave.

      Accommodation:

Detroit offers a wide variety of lodging options. Students look for reasonable accommodations should contact the following hotels for rates and availablilty:
      • Branteaney's Bed & Breakfast Inn on Chappus St. in Windsor
      • Candlewood Suites on Hills Tech Dr. in Farmington Hills
      • Comfort Inn on Buckingham Dr. in Livonia
      • Comfort Inn Downtown on E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit
      • Courtyard by Marriott Downtown on E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit

      Sports:

Detroit's pro teams include the Tigers (baseball), Lions (football), Pistons (basketball), and Red Wings (hockey). Enjoy all kinds of indoor and outdoor sports: Hit the river solo in a rented kayak, a canoe for two, or with a raft full of friends. In the winter, choose among cross-country or downhill skiing, snowboarding, or snowboarding.

      Transportation:

They don't call it Motor City for nothing—cars still rule in Detroit. Detroit is working on a light rail system, which they hope will be just the first stage in a larger, regional transit system.
